Sometimes I’m Afraid of Ruining What I Have

Textile dyeing labs: Getting to know the materials and methods we use in art and design production through process and experimentation.
These workshops provide participants with a hands-on introduction to textile dyeing through use of a variety of natural and synthetic materials.
The labs also provide a window to discuss and reflect on questions we encounter while working with dyes; drawing on the histories, folklore, and impact of textile industries, plant cultivation and the power of color from a decolonial and ecocritical perspective.

Below are images of from past workshops at the AKI BioMatters Lab in Enschede, NL.
Students calculated dye amounts, mordanted fibers, processed dyes from raw materials such as mushrooms, logwood, and cochineal, experimented with dye bath variables, ‘laked’ dye baths to create dry pigments for ink, and created color samples and textiles for future reference or their current personal artistic practices.
