Scale Trees (Lepidodendron); one of the Earth’s earliest attempts at growing a tree. These now-extinct leafless, densely-grown vascular plants proliferated during the Carboniferous Period 350 million years ago. The bacteria responsible for decomposition of organic matter as we recognise it today had not yet evolved. Rather than rot, the Scale trees simply fell as they died, stacking and becoming compressed over hundreds of thousands of years, resulting in Black Coal.
